Pursuing Your Dream: 7 Lessons from Dr. Martin Luther King

Today, as we honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I’m struck by the transformative power of a dream. Dr. King’s vision wasn’t just words spoken on a stage—it was a beacon of hope that changed lives, communities, our nation, and the world.

His iconic "I Have a Dream" speech continues to inspire millions, painting a picture of a future where people are judged not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. A future where harmony replaces division, and where people of faith courageously stand against injustice.

So what’s your dream? What vision has been placed on your heart to bring change to your life, your community, or even the world? And are there any lessons we can learn from Dr. King’s life and legacy about pursuing our dream?

7 Lessons from Dr. Martin Luther King's Pursuit of His Dream

Here are 7 lessons I’ve observed from Dr. King’s Life as he stewarded and pursued his dream:

1. God had given him a dream and vision that was bigger than his church and his initial calling as a local church pastor.
2. He allowed that dream to incubate deeply within his heart and soul, allowing the Spirit to confirm it within him.
3. God led him to re-imagine his pastoral calling to include this big dream and to pursue them together.
4. It took courage to go public with a dream that many others weren’t able to see yet.
5. It took courage to take action that others - even other Christians and fellow pastors - thought was wrong.
6. His actions inspired, encouraged, and motivated millions of others to share in the dream.
7. The impact of his dream and actions had immediate effect, and are still being felt in our nation and world today more than 60 years later.

7 Questions for Reflection on Your Dream

So how can we apply these lessons from Dr. King’s life to our own lives? Here are 7 questions to help us process and take action:

1. What’s your dream? Do you have a dream, a passion, or maybe a holy discontent that inspires and motivates you? Is there a cause you care deeply about, a problem you want to solve, a need you want to meet? If so, I want to affirm you in your dream!
2. If not, is it time to dream a big dream? To let your heart dream and think out of the box about what could be possible for you?
3. How are you stewarding that dream? Are you nurturing it in your heart and soul, allowing the Spirit to confirm it within you?
4. Is there something keeping you from pursuing your dream? Self doubt? What others might think?
5. Is it time to re-imagine your calling to include that dream? Sometimes we think we need to choose one or the other: choose to pastor our church or pursue this dream. But what if God is simply calling you to re-imagine your calling so you can pursue them both together for his glory?
6. Is it time to take the courage to go public with your dream, even if others aren’t able to see it yet?
7. Is it time to take action on your dream? Even if others think it’s not possible for you?
